Mietek Pachter - ocalały z Zagłady, uczestnik i obserwator powstania w getcie warszawskim oraz autor wyjątkowego świadectwa "Umierać też trzeba umieć" zmarł 25 listopada 2018 roku w Villemomble pod Paryżem. Miał 95 lat.
W grudniu 1946 r. Mietek Pachter, chory na gruźlicę, trafił na leczenie do Davos. W sanatorium, za radą terapeutki spisał po polsku 700 stron wspomnień. Powstało wyjątkowe świadectwo Zagłady, które zadziwia stopniem szczegółowości opisu, głębią refleksji nad stanami emocjonalnymi i relacjami oraz trafnością obserwacji. Świadectwo Pachtera jest tym bardziej wyjątkowe, że zostało spisane przez młodego mężczyznę, któremu wojna uniemożliwiła uzyskanie formalnego wykształcenia.
W czasie wojny Mietkowi Pachterowi niewiele zostało oszczędzone z tragedii swojego narodu. Wielokrotnie był w sytuacji bezpośredniego zagrożenia życia i doświadczył niewyobrażalnego zła. Miał 16 lat, gdy wraz rodzicami i dwoma braćmi trafił do warszawskiego getta, gdzie pracował przymusowo oraz razem ze starszym bratem Wilkiem pomagał ojcu w szmuglu. Cała rodzina przetrwała akcję likwidacyjną latem 1942 roku. W akcji styczniowej 1943 zginęli rodzice i najmłodszy brat. Mietek i Wilek Pachterowie brali udział w powstaniu w getcie, wyciągnięci z bunkra pod koniec kwietnia 1943 przetrwali kilkudniową gehennę na Umshlagplatz, a następnie trafili w jednym z transportów do Treblinki. Uniknęli śmierci w komorze gazowej, ponieważ ich transport jako jeden z zaledwie kilku w całej historii działania „fabryki śmierci” został odesłany do obozu na Majdanku. Po kilku miesiącach dramatycznej walki o życie w obozie koncentracyjnym, Mietek wraz z bratem zostali przewiezieni do obozu pracy HASAG w Skarżysku Kamiennej, gdzie kontynuowali niewolniczą i wyniszczającą pracę.
Przeniesiony w końcowej fazie wojny do Częstochowy obóz, został w styczniu 1945 wyzwolony przez Armię Czerwoną. Mietek i Wilek Pachterowie podjęli nieudaną próbę zbudowania na nowo życia w Polsce. W 1946 r. trafili do obozu dipisów w Niemczech gdzie nastąpiło bolesne rozstanie braci. Mietek okazał się ciężko chory na gruźlicę i dzięki wsparciu Jointu trafił do szwajcarskiego sanatorium w Davos. Wilek zdołał dotrzeć do Palestyny.
Po zakończonym leczenia Mietek Pachter trafił do wuja do Francji i wkrótce założył własną rodzinę. Ostatecznie nie zdecydował się na wyjazd do Izraela. Przez całe życie prowadził z żoną niewielki sklep. W 2012 roku podczas edycji książki rozmawiał z Barbarą Engelking, niestety stan jego zdrowia i pamięci szybko się pogarszał pozostawiając świadectwo
zamkniętą całością.
Mietek Pachter zmarł w domu, otoczony do końca troskliwą opieką rodziny. Został pochowany w Izraelu.
Po przeczytaniu „Umierać też trzeba umieć” historia Mietka Pachtera stała mi się szczególnie bliska. Tragiczne losy wojenne rodziny Pachterów pozostawiły we mnie przekonanie, że głębokie dobre relacje są wartością samą w sobie i w tym sensie są silniejsze od śmierci i zniszczenia. W ostatnich latach regularnie korespondowałem z córką Mietka Pachtera, panią Regine Pachter. Wiem, że moje refleksje trafiły do zmarłego, co jest dla mnie zaszczytem. Dziękuję także, za możliwość wymiany myśli o książce z prof. Barbarą Engelking. Podzielam jej opinię, że to wyjątkowe świadectwo zasługuje na szerszą popularyzację.
