Statement by prof. Barbara Engelking and prof. Jan Grabowski after the judgment in the case filed by Filomena Leszczyńska and launched with support and participation of The Polish League against Defamation Foundation
We are very grateful to all people and institutions from Poland and around the world for their support and solidarity during the trial initiated by Filomena Leszczyńska (and launched with support and participation of The Polish League against Defamation Foundation) regarding the alleged defamation of her uncle, Edward Malinowski who, during the war, was a village elder in Malinowo. We would also like to express our gratitude to our attorney, Mr. Michał Jabłoński.
The Warsaw District Court decided that we have to offer apologies to Mrs. Leszczyńska for having written in the book that Malinowski robbed Estera Siemiatycka and that he was involved in denouncing Jews in hiding to Germans. While respecting the verdict, we do not agree with it, and we shall file an appeal to a higher court.
